Being asked to be someone's best man is indeed a great honor.
While most of us only think of the parties and the festivities, there are a number of duties that is expected of you before, during and after the wedding ceremony.
Traditionally the best man was appointed by the groom to protect his wife during the week long wedding festivities.
Back in the middle ages this was a huge responsibility and often swords were drawn as the best man protected the bride from drunk patrons.
Not much has changed, yet everything has changed.
The tradition is still very much alive although the duties have changed completely.
So, what are your main responsibilities as the best man? Here are 3 of them that you are probably not that familiar with.
1.
Co-coordinating The Wedding Ceremony Although this varies with different weddings, the idea is that you will take on an organizing role at the wedding and help to greet guests as they arrive.
You will also be required to show them to their seats and help out to get the wedding started.
2.
Best Man Speech You will be required to make a speech at the wedding ceremony.
Although some people see this as an opportunity to slag off the groom, its actually the opposite.
Your speech is there to bless the newly weds and boosting the groom rather than slagging him off is more appropriate.
3.
Rings As the best man you will be right next to the groom at the ceremony.
One of your responsibilities is to keep the wedding rings safe and to present them at the right moment during the wedding.
This is not really a custom anymore but many grooms still prefer this and you should at least offer to keep the rings safely.
