Evernight - Book 1 by Claudia Gray
Although the premise seems similar to other books that use a school for the setting, Gray's characters each have their own unique tales.
And Bianca, the heroine, tells them in first person narration.
The book begins with a prologue.
Bianca and Lucas, the young hero, are trapped in a burning building and worried about dying.
But from what - the flames or the vampires waiting outside? Back to the beginning.
Bianca's parents decide to move.
Sixteen year old Bianca is a shy girl and she's not happy about leaving behind her friends and starting over at a new school.
Evernight Academy, where her parents will be teaching, has a creepy gothic appearance and the snotty, wealthy students put her off.
Bianca decides to run away but she meets another outcast, Lucas Ross, and he convinces her to stay.
Romance blossoms, but they each harbor some dark secrets that threaten to keep them apart - and put them in danger as well.
This is a quick, sometimes predictable, read but there are some twists that keep the pages turning.
The story is fast paced with enough action and romance to keep things lively.
It is easy to become invested in the characters who deal with the classic elements of teen angst like fitting in and the opposite sex.
It's an entertaining read that will leave you wanting more but never fear there is a book two.
