How to Root Million Bells

    • 1). Trace a healthy stem back to the ground from an existing million bells plant any time during the growing season. Cut the stem off at least 6 inches from the tip. Try to find a stem that has small buds but no flowers on it.

    • 2). Fill a small bucket with a mixture of half potting soil and half peat moss. Mix the two together well with a spoon.

    • 3). Fill a 4- to 5-inch diameter plant pot three-fourths full of the potting soil mixture and poke a 1-inch-deep hole in the center of it with your finger.

    • 4). Insert the cut end of the million bells cutting into the hole and push the soil up around the stem to hold it in place. If any leaves touch the soil surface, pull them off of the stem with your fingers to prevent them from rotting.

    • 5). Water the soil with 1/4 cup of water just until it is barely moist. Apply additional water if the soil starts to feel dry, but do not over water. Saturated soil during the first two weeks can kill the cutting.

    • 6). Place the container near a window that receives bright sunlight. If bright sunlight is not available, such as during winter, place the pot under plant grow lights positioned 6 inches above the stem.

    • 7). Place a thermometer near the pot to ensure that it maintains a constant temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If needed, set the pot on a heating mat set to 70 F to provide necessary warmth.
