    • 1). Cut flowers from the garden in the early morning or late evening. This is the time of day when they are the most moist with water. Cut flowers from the garden that have not fully bloomed.

    • 2). Fill a clean plastic bucket or container with warm water. Carry it to the garden for immediate placement of the cut flowers.

    • 3). Use a sharp pair of cutting shears to cut the flowers. Avoid using regular scissors, as these will damage the stem of the flower and hinder food and water from getting to the plant.

    • 4). Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. Make the cut approximately one inch from the bottom of one of the main stems on the flower. Cutting above a dormant bud or a node is also acceptable.

    • 5). Place the cut flowers immediately into the waiting pail of water. Let the flowers sit in the pail of water for about two hours.

    • 6). Recut the stems every three days. Hold the stems under water and make a slanted cut in the stem 1/2 inch from the bottom.

    • 7). Cut the stems of precut flowers as soon as you get them home. Remove 1/2 inch to 1 inch from the bottom. Make a slanted cut and immediately place the flowers in a clean vase with warm water. Hold the stems under water and cut them down 1/2 inch every three days.
