- 1). Insert the stem of the hookah into the body of the device, ensuring there is a snug fit.
- 2). Fill the base roughly half full of water.
- 3). Lower the center stem between one and two inches into the water.
- 4). Mount the round metal ashtray to the top of the stem of the hookah.
- 5). Set the clay or porcelain bowl on top of the stem. Depending on the exact specifications of your hookah, it may include a rubber gasket that is placed below the bowl.
- 6). Insert all the hoses into the hookah by pushing them onto their mounts. Your device may have one hose or multiple hoses. Ensure the hoses are securely sealed on their mounts.
- 7). Pour some hookah tobacco (often called shisha) or herbal shisha alternative into the bowl, ensuring that it is not packed so densely as to interrupt air flow.
- 8). Cover the tobacco bowl with the metal screen device that is included with the hookah. If no screen is included, you may use an appropriate-sized piece of tinfoil, punched full of small holes. Place the shiny side of the tinfoil to the bottom.
- 9). Light the hookah coal. When it is red hot, place it directly on top of the metal screen or tinfoil.
