How to Build a Knee-Wall Bookcase
- 1). Measure the area where you want to install your knee-wall bookshelf.
- 2). Purchase cut lumber that fits the specified measurements of the wall you want to build. Purchase lumber for shelves and supports.
Lumber should be 12 inches wide by 1 inch thick by the length you want for your room. - 3). Cut lumber for your shelves and supports. Each shelf should be 12-by-1-by-10 inches to 20 inches long. Each support should be 12-by-1inch thick and long enough to fit between the top and bottom boards of your shelf.
- 4). Put one support at each end of your knee-wall bookshelf to close off the shelf and prevent people from tripping on it or tipping it over.
- 5). Nail your supports to the top and bottom shelves with 1 inch nails. Use a level or ruler to ensure that each support is aligned with the shelves.
- 6). Attach four brackets to each support; place two brackets 2 to 3 inches from each side of the support.
- 7). Place your shelves on the brackets and attach them with screws.
- 8). Use nails or screws to attach one end of your knee-wall shelf to a wall. Place books and other items on your shelves.
