The Requirements for a History Degree

If you enjoy reading about history or are instantly mesmerised by history programming on television, a history degree may be for you. There is a wide array of career opportunities for those with a B.A. in history. You could become a historian specializing in your favorite time period. You could work at a museum. You could teach and instill a love of history and learning in a new generation. The possibilities are endless. The requirements for a bachelor's degree in history vary by school, but here is an overview of where your educational journey will take you. - The University of Maryland University College requires 120 credits of coursework, including 33 credits toward the major. History majors are required to earn six credits in U.S. history and three credits in historical writing. They choose from a variety of courses to fulfill their six credits of world history, including Western civilizations and East Asian civilization. Next come one upper-level U.S. history course, a European history course, a world regions course and nine more credit hours in history classes of the student's choice. These 33 credits are only part of the degree, with an additional 87 credit hours to earn before a student graduates.
A history degree through UMUC can be earned entirely online, on campus or a combination of both.

umuc.edu - At American University, a B.A. in history requires 120 credit hours, 39 of which must be in history subjects. The student completes six credit hours in major seminars and three in ancient or medieval history. One class may be in Asian, Eastern European, modern Middle Eastern or Russian history. Another class must be in African, African-American, Latin American or Native American history. A history major completes courses in upper-level American and British or Western European history. The rest of the history classes are chosen to fit the interest and needs of the student. At least 15 credit hours must be obtained through upper-level courses.

Twelve credit hours consist of basic history courses, such as American civilizations, Native American history and world civilizations. The remaining 25 credits are upper-level courses and consist of two classes in American or Canadian history, two in European history, one class in Asian, African or Latin history, an introduction to the study of history class, and a senior seminar or two more upper-level history courses of the student's choice.
