Visualization Doesn"t Work

Visualizing is something that several people have trouble with. It can be incredibly difficult to create a vision of things that haven’t happened yet, and even if your imagination is great, it’s actually not enough. Many trainers in personal development agree that it's important that your visualizations feel real to you. But you are rarely shown how to make them real. Many people give up after trying once or twice to make a realistic vision of their future.

The problem seems to arise from the language used. While the word visualizing suggests that you have to create a picture in your mind, not everything thinks this way. For some people a mental picture will never feel real. So visualizing simply doesn’t work for them.

Clearly having a vision and images of the future works for some, but how can we broaden the concept to include and help people who can’t visualize.

To start you must change the way you see visualization. You need to find a word or concept that fits with how you think. I prefer to use the very broad concept of Experiencing. I can still create a feeling of achieving my goal through experiencing my future with other forms of perception. I think about the atmosphere I will be in more than the image of where I will be. If I want to travel to Hawaii I will conjure up the feeling of hot sun on my skin, a smell of flowers in the air, etc. If my goal is to get a new car I really try to feel the leather seats on the back of my arms, smell the new car smell. Often many images will come up in my mind, but the goal is more realistic if I can truly feel the atmosphere and I will become more emotionally connected to my goal.

It’s important to understand WHY you need to visualize. It's not about imagining your future, it's about creating an emotional connection to your goals, it's about attracting the outcome you desire through your focus on it. Emotion is the most important part of visualizing, feeling exhilarated and excited about what you are attracting. So if the most important part is emotional, what makes you emotional? What makes things you imagine feel real?

Once you know what illicits an emotional response in you, think about and experience your goal that way. If sound creates an emotional feel for you, you can think about the sound of knives scraping plates at a lovely restaurant, of waves hitting the beach, of a great conversation you might have with your partnee. Smell could be your emotional trigger, think of the smells in a brand new car, of the salt water at the beach, of the flowers outside a vacation home. It may be touch, and this one definitely works for me. How moist is the air? How soft is the new couch at your lovely new home? How hard is it to push in the gas pedal of your brand new car?

Often when you start by picturing your atmosphere through sound, touch, smell, etc the images will come to your mind without any effort. Your mind fills in any blank to complete your experience. This experience will help you feel calm, excited, and completely attached to reaching your goals. Knowing what is ahead of you will help you to push forward through any obstacles to get what you know you deserve. And you will attract the experiences you want faster than you ever could have imagined.
