Pruning of tree is done for many reasons. Trees are pruned to produce increased fruit or flowers during the next growing season, to contain them in a manner that prevent potential hazards and in some cases as a form of art. These art works are done by shaping the trees or shrubs into a fairytale world of characters and shapes making the garden into something that the home owner and his guests can enjoy and appreciate. Cultures in certain countries have practiced this form of art for many centuries.
Using tree pruning in the average Australian garden may serve a completely different purpose. The key to successful pruning is to prune away the branches that need pruning while at the same time protecting the trunk wood of the tree. Most species of trees in the area grow their branches from stems that are situated at the nodes on the trunk. The expert arborist employed to do the pruning will always do their pruning from the branch side of these nodes. Most trees have a lip of tissue visible that is called a€stem collar€. This stem collar grows out from the base of the tree branches and this effectively separates branches and stems.
When the arborist doing the specific work does their pruning on the branch side of these stem collars, he will protect the tree stems and any other branches that could be growing from them. Another reason for doing the pruning at these spots is that healing for the tree is more effective and it will further prevent damage or tearing the wood of the bark and stem.
Pruning specialists may be called to do tree pruning to remove branches in the tree that has been the result of disease or environmental damage. During violent storms branches are subjected to extreme amounts of stress and could be literally torn from the tree either completely or partially. These partial torn of branches could create potential hazards that has to be effectively removed.
Using the services of a professional arborist to thin the crown of the tree by pruning is effective to promote new and vigorous growth. At the same time, tree pruning gives the tree and garden more air circulation. Many times the height that certain tree species can reach becomes a hazard as they can encroach on power lines. This should have been prevented by initially planting the correct species suitable for the space that they would occupy in the garden. Obstructing foliage and branches is another cause for tree pruning and the experience of the arborist can be used to effectively shape the tree into the most effective and suitable shape for the size of the garden.
Because tree pruning could involve the use of climbing gear and heavy duty saws to be able to cut the thick branches and limps this should be left to the trained arborist to do without harm to the environment. The use of their specialised equipment is designed for this specific purpose.
