- 1). Remove the operators manual from the case mounted on the boom lift platform. The case is generally mounted below the control box in a plastic case with a secured lid. If the operators manual is not located within the storage case, contact a supervisor to get a replacement manual. Read the operating section of the manual to familiarize yourself with the platform controls of the boom lift.
- 2). Put on the fall protection harness and inspect the lanyard for any damage. Perform a pre-use checklist of the boom lift to ensure that the lift is functioning properly, the tires are properly inflated, the safety devices are working correctly and no fluids are leaking from the boom lift.
- 3). Climb into the boom lift platform, connect the safety rail chain and attach the hook of your lanyard to the marked anchor point that is attached to the platform. Test the turn and drive functions of the lift. Perform a function check of each boom arm and the articulating arms located near the base. Before you ascend with the boom arms, survey the area overhead so you can avoid overhead obstacles and pinch points.
- 4). Raise the boom platform enough that you have a clear view of the boom lift's front wheels. Slowly move the driving control to begin moving the boom lift. Keep a constant eye on the area around the lift for people, obstacles and ground hazards. If you encounter a hazard, stop moving the lift until the hazard has cleared. Lower the boom platform and inspect ground hazards to ensure that the hazard will not injure you or others in the area. Keep the boom lift on the slow or turtle speed when in a congested area.
- 5). Use the steering controls to control the lift while under motion. Do not jerk the driving controls, this will cause an unsafe sway in the boom lift, which can eject you from the lift and cause you serious injury. If you encounter a blind spot that you cannot safely see 100 percent of the area, rotate the base of the boom lift to obtain a better vantage point.
- 6). Lower the basket of the boom lift to the ground after the boom lift has been moved to its new location. Depress the red emergency stop button to kill the power to the platform controls. Disconnect your lanyard from the platform's anchor point and exit the boom lift platform.
