    Competitive

    • Before you ever begin, you must have a certain amount of drive. The entertainment industry is nothing if not competitive. Add to that the fact that jobs are being outsources overseas, and you've got a classic case of supply outweighing demand. Believe in your ability. Do your best work from volunteer to big budget projects. Keep up on industry trends. This will help you stand out from the rest and gain the competitive edge.

    Educated

    • Animators are typically required to hold a bachelor's degree. A focus in one of the following is recommended: animation, graphic design/illustration, 3-D design, film and video, multimedia, computer-aided engineering, and model making or sculpture.

    Talented

    • Talent is a key ingredient to being an animator. You must possess aptitude in drawing and the visual arts. You must be creative, and it must be proved. One way to do this is by joining a residency upon graduation. This will help you build industry contacts, as well as a portfolio. When you apply for a job in animation, you will need to submit your resume and a Show Reel. A Show Reel is brief clip that demonstrates your ability. Also remember that the first five minutes are critical; if you cannot capture interest in those first minutes, you lose the opportunity.

    Flexible

    • Once you get the job, you must be flexible. You must be able to meet tight deadlines and budgetary constraints. You must be able to seamlessly add your drawings to music, layouts, storylines, and special effects.

    Collaborative

    • As an animator, you must be able to work well with others. You will be required to meet with other members of the project team from copywriting to sales in order to brainstorm and keep on track. You may be required to work with programmers to make your three-dimensional objects move. There is typically collaboration even within the animation itself, as one animator typically writes the story, builds characters, and draws the key aspects of the story. Assistants fill in as needed.
