Best Font For Resume Writing
There are many opinions among the professionals and the job seekers that want to write their own resume as they try to decide what the best font for resume writing should be. Actually, there are quite a few job seekers that can do an excellent job writing their own work, don't get me wrong. But, it is the other 80% that I am referring to. These are usually the ones that (especially girls) wanting to make it all (fluff) and pretty. You know what I mean; their names are in 30 font in French or free style script. You can't even read the contact information, and they will even continue with the entire resume in script. It is really hard on the eyes for one thing, and beside the fact that it is not professional looking at all. Much less the guys that bring in this four page resume that is Arial black and in extremely large print; what are you guys thinking?
Presentation is so very important; let me say this again…. Presentation is extremely important when you are writing your resume. This is more than likely your career that you are writing about and it should portray your character, your work habits and how you would fit-in at your next place of employment. A resume should be clean and crisp! This is not the time to play around with your artistic abilities, your career is on the line.
My professional opinion is that your resume should be at least similar to the following. Your name is very important, so I would use font 18 to 20 and in bold print, the address/phone number is secondary and follows in smaller characters. I prefer to use font 10 to give it a little less status. Next, which I always use on all of my resumes that I write is a title, it can be presented with multiple titles listed together. An example would be: Customer Services / Sales / Management. By doing this you have not closed any doors on yourself, and this of course would be centered using font 16-18 and also in bold print letting them know who you are and why you are there!
Your skills and summary can be normal which I would refer to as font 11 and regular print, but when you have a specific area such as: Career Accomplishments or Work History this would be in font 14 and bold print. I would follow these guidelines throughout the remainder of the resume. After your job description of each employer I prefer to follow with 3 to 5 one line bullets of more notable accomplishments, I always put these in italics and regular Arial.
This makes for a very eye catching resume, well presented with a little flair. And, I have been told more than once of how the hiring managers raise an eyebrow when they first see a resume written in this manner. I have found that they are extremely user and reader friendly as well. It is extremely necessary to put your best foot forward, and remember - You Never Get a Second Chance to Make a First Impression!
