How do I Get Rid of Smog Equipment on a Chevelle?
- 1). Loosen the tension nuts on all of the engine's accessories. Remove the fan from the water pump, then remove the accessory belts. Unbolt the AIR or EGR pump from the front of the engine. The location will vary depending upon the year and trim package of your Chevelle. Remove the existing crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft.
- 2). Affix a new crankshaft pulley that does not have a groove for an AIR or smog pump. Replace accessory belts. Reattach fan to the water pump. Use the small breaker bar to tighten each accessory. Ensure that all belts are taut.
- 3). Remove EGR or AIR valve tubes running into each exhaust manifold. Replace the exhaust manifolds with ones that do not have EGR or AIR ports, or replace them with exhaust headers.
- 4). Remove the EGR valve from the intake manifold. Remove the intake manifold and replace it with one that does not have an EGR inlet valve, or simply plug off the EGR port with a brass plug. Line the threads of the brass plug with plumber's tape to ensure a complete, airtight seal before threading in the plug.
