How to Properly Use an Absorbent on an Oil Spill

    • 1). Choose an absorbent -- several different types can work well on an oil spill. What you choose depends on what you have around the house. Your options are cat litter, baking soda, cornmeal, cornstarch or sand.

    • 2). Cover the oil spill with the absorbent you chose. Use a very generous amount and be sure the oil is completely covered by the absorbent.

    • 3). Wait for the absorbent to soak up and remove the oil spill. The amount of time you wait can depend on the amount of oil needing to be absorbed, but generally you should wait at least an hour. Remember, while you can't wait too long, you can remove the absorbent before the oil has been fully taken up.

    • 4). Use a stiff brush and dust pan to remove the absorbent. If it has had time to completely absorb the spill, the oil should no longer be present once the absorbent is removed.
