The United States along with Israel knows full well that whatever else we allow to happen in life we can by no means allow the Iranians to become nuclear capable. The President of Iran makes no bones about what he intends to do if he gets nuclear weapons. He has already begun to make moves to equip himself to use them by increasing the number of strategic missiles in his arsenal among other things. His intentions to use these weapons are not a surprise to our government or any other government for that matter.
The US has attempted to use sanctions, diplomatic persuasion, and veiled threats of military retaliation to persuade the Iranians not to seek to go nuclear but all of these things have done absolutely nothing to change their minds.
The military option has always been on the table but it is almost unrealistic because of the volatility in the region and the fact that political fallout from a pre emptive military attack is totally unpredictable.
The US has also used covert measures to prevent the Iranians from going nuclear and obviously there has been more success with covert operations. I know that this is true because I see that Iran hasnt successfully got its nuclear reactors up and running as of yet. The reason that they have not been able to do so is because of a computer worm known as STUXNET.
The STUXNET worm was developed in Israel with the assistance of the CIA. It was launched in 2009 and introduced into Irans reactor computers in 2010. The method of introduction is a mystery but it has successfully shut down their reactors. It caused problems by telling the gas centrifuges to spin too rapidly. The Iranians immediately shut down the operation when they discovered that there was a problem which is good for them but in any event they will not be able to run their reactors for several years to come.
There may have been more damage done than they know about because STUXNET was designed to create multiple problems. When they get the problem straightened out with the centrifuges they could quite possibly run into a myriad of other complications. The best action that they can take would be to clean out everything and start again from scratch. Even if they do this I am sure that the US and Israel have both made contingency plans to prevent them from acquiring clean parts and products.
The Iranians may buy new computers and parts for their reactors but there is a rumor that the United States has found a way to sabotage the parts before the Iranians are able to get their hands on them. The way that this may have been done was by sabotaging the equipment and then providing it to front companies who then sold it to the Iranians.
