    Removal of the Oil Pan

    • 1). Crawl under the truck to locate the oil pan. The oil pan is at the bottom of the engine.

    • 2). Place a drain pan underneath the engine. The drain pan needs to be able to hold at least six quarts.

    • 3). Unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the engine drain pan with a crescent wrench. Allow all the oil to drain out into the pan. Screw the drain plug back into the pan.

    • 4). Locate the oil filter directly in front of the engine. Unscrew the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Place the filter with the waste oil.

    • 5). Loosen and remove the bolts holding the oil pan in place. There will be 16 to 20 bolts to take out. Place the bolts in a safe place so you can access them when you are ready to install the new oil pan.

    • 6). Pull the pan down with your hands. The gasket around the pan may have created a seal making the pan stubborn to remove. Tap the pan with a hammer to loosen the grip from the bottom of the motor.

    • 7). Scrape the bottom of the motor with a putty knife or razor scraper to clean off any of the remaining gasket material.

    Installing the New Oil Pan

    • 1). Match the gasket around the edge of the new oil pan. Ensure the holes in the gasket match the bolt holes on the pan. Take the gasket off the oil pan.

    • 2). Pour a thin bead of black RTV silicone around the surface of the oil pan. Circle the bolt holes with the silicone. Place the gasket around the oil pan over the silicone. The silicone will ensure the gasket stays put while you position the oil pan to the bottom of the motor.

    • 3). Place the oil pan up to the motor. Ensure each bolt is threaded before tightening with the socket wrench. Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern until all the bolts are tight.

    • 4). Pour one quart of motor oil in the oil filter. Dip a finger into the motor oil. Spread the oil around the black gasket at the top of the oil filter. The oil will act as a lubricant to make a better seal. This will help when the filter is ready to be changed at the next oil change interval.

    • 5). Screw the oil filter to the oil-filter housing with your hands. Tightening the filter with a wrench will strip the threads on the filter.

    Adding the Engine Oil

    • 1). Open the hood to gain access to the engine compartment. The oil cap is located on the valve cover. Unscrew the oil cap and place it to the side.

    • 2). Pour in four quarts of oil to the engine. Pull the engine oil dipstick out of the dipstick tube and wipe off with a clean rag. Insert the dipstick back into the tube and pull it out. Locate the level of the oil against the markings on the dipstick. Pour in oil at half-quart intervals and check the level on the dipstick until the level indicates full. Screw the oil cap back on over the valve cover.

    • 3). Start the truck and allow it to run for at least five minutes. Turn the truck off and allow it to sit for an additional five minutes. Check the oil again to ensure the level is full. Add more oil if necessary.
