Andrea Maller's Confessions of a Fat Camp Survivor is a riveting 56-day memoir chronicling a sixteen year-old's "banishment" to fat camp, away from the Twinkies, Snickers, and all other sugarcoated goodies. On the second day, she meets a girl named Ethel who knows the ins and outs of Fat Camp-going seven years straight, Ethel's a veteran. From sneaking out of camp to restock their secret stash of junk food to picking out potential flames, Andrea and Ethel do everything together and set the foundation for a beautiful friendship.
The message of the book is that one should not change for others. Through Fat Camp, Andrea and Ethel both achieve self-acceptance and a strengthened self-esteem. At the same time, they build normal healthy relationships with others at the camp and even fall for the men of their dreams (Ethel for David and Andrea for Leo).
Andrea's goal is the opposite of everyone else at fat camp. Instead of losing weight, she is on a quest to put on five pounds a week to convince her mom that she should stop trying to change her. As Andrea and Ethel try to elude Skinny Sarah, the head of fat camp, her dramatic flair is on full display. An example from her journal reads, "Either I will be a success and ten pounds heavier, or a dismal failure withering away into nothingness. My mom says I'm overly dramatic, but I don't really see it."
Glimpse into the happenings of fat camp and see that all camp goers must run five miles every day, and on double duty days, you'll see that tasks include the morning run, "rabbit food for lunch," as Andrea puts it in her journal, and the death challenge, better known as the obstacle course.
Overall, Confessions of a Fat Camp Survivor is about a passion for food, romance and relationships. More importantly, it is about finding one's social niche and being part of a group instead of living in isolation and fear. Each and every person has something to contribute-as long as he/she is in the right environment-regardless of his/her appearance. Digging deeper, you'll find that it's about the freedom to be what you want to be, and be comfortable and accepted in that form. Andrea Maller's Confessions is a must read that will surely bring a smile to your face-you'll appreciate it for its genuine nature and downright honesty.
