    Get Remote Access

    • 1). If the computer to which you wish to connect is on your local network you will need the computer name or internal IP address. Otherwise you will need the public IP address or full domain name to connect across the Internet. Obtain this now and write it down for future reference.

    • 2). Start your computer and make sure you are connected to the Internet or your local network.

    • 3). Click the "Start" button in windows toolbar.

    • 4). Highlight "All Programs" then "Accessories" and select "Remote Desktop Connection."

    • 5). In the field provided, type the IP address, computer name or full domain of the computer you want to connect to.

    • 6). Click the "Connect" button.

    • 7). If the connection is successful you should be prompted to log in to the remote computer. Use a log in that has access to that computer.

    • 8). You are now logged in with remote access to a different computer using Windows XP.

    Remote Computer Access Setup

    • 1). Log on to the remote computer to make sure it is configured to accept remote connections.

    • 2). Right-click on the "My Computer" icon, on the desktop or the Start menu, and select "Properties."

    • 3). Click the "Remote" tab.

    • 4). Under the Remote Desktop section make sure the check box is selected next to "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer."

    • 5). The remote computer is now configured to accept incoming remote desktop access requests. Now is also a good time to get the IP address you will need to connect to this computer for later reference. Use the tips below to get the IP address.
