How to Change the Fuel Filter on a 2001 Silverado Truck
- 1). Relieve the fuel line pressure: Remove the gas cap to relieve any pressure built up in the tank. Open the cover of the large black fuse box located under the hood, and refer to the diagram on the inside of the cover to locate the fuel pump relay. Pull the relay out of its socket. Turn the ignition key to the start position, and let the motor turn over for several seconds. The motor will either start momentarily then shut off, or will not start at all. Turn the key off.
- 2). Remove the negative battery cable using the small adjustable wrench.
- 3). Place the floor jack under the driver's side of the Silverado, and jack it up. Place a jack stand under the vehicle at a solid point such as the frame rail. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stand.
- 4). Slide under the Silverado. Locate the fuel filter, which can be found mounted to the frame rail near the gas tank. It is a small cylindrical object connected to steel fuel lines on each end. Spray carburetor cleaner around the fittings holding the metal lines to the fuel filter to clean them off.
- 5). Use an open-end wrench to hold the nut on the fuel filter in position, and use the line wrench to loosen the nut on the fuel line at the filter. Repeat for the other end of the fuel filter and remove the lines from the filter. Keep a rag on hand to catch any fuel that may spill.
- 6). Place the new filter in position and slide the fuel lines into the filter line inlets. Hand-tighten the fuel line nuts onto the new filter.
- 7). Use a box-end wrench to hold the nut on the filter in position, and use a line wrench to tighten the fuel line nut firmly.
- 8). Lower the vehicle and reinstall the fuel pump relay.
