- 1). Learn about the area you're visiting. It will make finding accommodations easier. If all the hotels with an indoor pool in the city center are booked, for instance, you can look for hotels in a safe nearby area with cheap and reliable public transportation to the city.
- 2). Conduct a targeted Internet search. Go to a hotel chain's website to check the local branches. Also consult the area's official tourism website; many will help you book your trip, providing listings for hotels, restaurants and attractions.
- 3). Call the hotel. If you don't have access to the Internet, call Information or go to your local library to find the hotel's national number in a reference book like LexisNexis' "Corporate Affiliations U.S. Public Companies."
- 4). Look at tour books. Established guides from companies like Fodor's, Frommer's and Lonely Planet include hotel listings with guest services. The selection typically covers hotels in different price ranges. The American Automobile Association (AAA) provides complimentary tour books to its members.
