- 1). Select a guitar neck profile from the side. Transfer that profile to a piece of cardboard or 1/4-inch plywood. Cut it out creating a template. Lay the template down on the 3/4-inch hardwood. Draw out five patterns and saw out five identical profiles.
- 2). Set the profiles side by side. Clamp and glue them all together. Wait 24 hours. The next day, scrape and clean off all excess glue. Set the joiner for 1/32 and run the neck through pushing it by the headstock facing up and to the rear.
- 3). Find the exact center lengthwise of the neck facing up. Position the truss rod and lay out a channel for it dead center. Starting where the headstock angle drops away, route down the entire length of the neck for the truss rod. Sand the surface with a sanding block until completely flat and smooth.
- 4). Using the fret board as a template. Draw out the front neck profile on a separate piece of cardboard or 1/4-inch plywood. Make another template for the headstock and transfer both designs to the neck individually with a pencil. Cut out the complete neck profile on a jigsaw leaving 1/8 inch on both sides of the pencil line.
- 5). Round the back of the neck with a medium wood rasp. Continue blending corners with a finer tooth wood rasp until the back of the neck has the desired radius. Switch to sandpaper and continue finishing the back of the neck by hand with sandpaper. The neck is now ready to have the truss rod glued in. It can then be drilled for tuners; headstock inlays and a rosewood fret board.
