How to Lay Laminate Hardwood Floors

    • 1). Roll plastic underlayment over the floor, in courses, side by side. Tape the sides together with underlayment tape.

    • 2). Set the first row of laminate hardwood floor boards along the edge of the floor where you want to start. Snap the boards together at the ends. Put wall spacers between the boards and the wall, to create a small space there.

    • 3). Cut the last piece in the row with a miter saw, leaving a 3/8-inch space at the end.

    • 4). Lay the next row along the first one, fitting the floorboards together along their long edges. Arrange them so the ends don't line up between the first and second courses. Use your miter saw to cut the last piece as needed.

    • 5). Work your way across the whole floor in this manner, row by row, staggering the ends of the boards and cutting as needed.

    • 6). Length-cut the final row of boards with a table saw, so there is a 3/8-inch gap along the ending wall.

    • 7). Cut and install floor trim for the perimeter of the floor, attaching it to the walls (not the floor) with a trim nail gun. The trim will hide the spaces by the walls.
