Ibuprofen for Dogs
- In humans, ibuprofen is used to treat fever and various mild aches and pains. In dogs, ibuprofen is not usually recommended due to the high level of health risks associated with the drug.
- Dogs who consume ibuprofen can suffer from serious gastrointestinal and kidney damage, including but not limited to stomach ulcers, kidney failure and even death. (References 2, 3)
- Common symptoms of ibuprofen toxicity include lack of appetite, darkened stool, vomit and blood present in the vomit, dehydration, abdominal pain, weakness and a general lethargy. (Reference 2)
- Depending on the dose consumed, treatment can vary. Hospitalization with IV fluids, activated charcoal, various medications and blood transfusions may all be necessary to treat ibuprofen toxicity in dogs. (Reference 2)
- While many medication bottles are child-proof, they are not pet-proof. Always keep medications behind closed doors and out of the reach of both pets and children who could potentially feed the medication to the dog. (Reference 2)
