How to Take Up VCT Flooring

    • 1). Take up the first VCT tile with your hammer and flatbar, starting at the seam between two tiles. Hit the flatbar with the hammer to drive it under the first tile. If the seam is too tight to fit the edge of the flatbar, use a razor knife to cut away some of the tile near the seam, creating a space for the flatbar to start.

    • 2). Set the flat edge of the power floor scraper into the space created by the extracted tile. Press the edge against the exposed side of one of the adjacent tiles. Start the scraper, letting it push under the tile while you move it forward.

    • 3). Work your way out over the rest of the floor, pushing the power scraper under the side of each of the tiles. Keep the tiles intact as much as possible as you remove them, as they will be easier to get out in one piece than if they break into several pieces. Take up all the tiles.

    • 4). Go over the floor with a razor scraper. Push it forward by hand over each section of the floor to take up any residual glue from the tiles. Stop frequently to sweep the surface with a broom. Do the whole floor.
