Country in Crisis, Where is Leadership?

Peter Drucker, legendary author, educator and management consultant once stated "Management is doing things right, leadership is doing the right things." According to most Americans, those traits and objectives have all but disappeared with sequestration. Is this an enigma within our government or will leadership become anti-adaptive, unresponsive and overtly reactive across the board?

Today's leadership practices have basic functions that include determining the business focus and direction ( mission and vision), securing commitment of those goals, and to roles assigned, setting standards that are understood and followed, supervision, setting an example, and holding the "creative tension" to name a few.

Responsibility is held for the public good in correct business ethics, public health and safety and the environment, meeting all local, state and federal laws in organizational operations and product/service life cycles.

Characteristics of effective leaders ask "What needs to be done." They have learned their own strengths and most effective means to achieve their business goals (strategic planning) while surrounding themselves with strong or stronger associates to achieve business success. Leaders know that team building yields exponential gains from its group processes i.e. planning, problem solving and decision making, with ultimate benefits in group effectiveness and member satisfaction.

Skill in communication is essential for the role of a leader. There are six types of communication climates which will almost always be perceived as threatening, hostile, attacking or otherwise communication-blocking: evaluation, control, strategy, neutrality, superiority, and certainty. Though there may be more, these are the most frequently encountered obstacles to effective communication. Another investment worth adding is the ability to effectively listen.

In 2004 Forbes magazine interviewed Peter Drucker on Leadership. In the article he talked about the danger of charisma: "Charismatic leadership by itself certainly is greatly overstated. There is too much talk, too much emphasis on it today and not enough on effectiveness. Look, one of the most effective American presidents of the last 100 years was Harry Truman. He didn't have an ounce of charisma but everybody who worked for him worshiped him because he was absolutely trustworthy. If Truman said no, it was no, and if it was yes, it was yes. And he didn't say no to one person and yes to the next one on the same issue."
