How to Turn A Modular Home Into A Log Home
- 1). Research log siding suppliers online or using your local yellow pages.
Real wood siding requires a sealant and regular maintenance but the finished product will look more like an authentic log home.
Vinyl or fabricated wood siding is usually lighter in weight and virtually maintenance free but may not give the true appearance of a log home. - 2). Discuss the weight and quantity with the supplier. You may wish to install the log siding on the exterior only, which may include special handling of the skirting if your home has it. If you are considering putting log siding on the interior to make the home look more like a true log home be aware that it could make the home darker inside.
- 3). Contact contractors to obtain quotes if you don't want to do the project yourself. Be sure contractors are licensed, bonded and insured before you make your choice. Order the siding you have chosen.
- 4). Remove the old siding first and replace or patch any damaged or torn house wrap or tar paper. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install it. Log siding manufacturers have varied systems for installing the siding and finishing the ends, but most log siding is made with a tongue and groove design for easy installation.
- 5). Place the first log siding board at the bottom, tongue facing upwards. Use galvanized or stainless steel fasteners or screws to attach the siding securely to the studs in the wall and countersink the heads. You need only to screw down the bottom panels. All panels above this will lock into the tongue and should be nailed downwards through the tongue at a 45 degree angle. Install the corners and trim per the manufacturer's instructions.
- 6). If you are planning to install the siding inside your home, find out from the manufacturer if it is necessary to remove the plasterboard first and other check for other considerations.
- 7). Once the siding is up, seal all openings with good quality caulking to keep insects and moisture out. Paint genuine wood siding with wood sealer. Don't forget to take before and after pictures.
