    • 1). To make your own darkening shampoo, you will need to start with a mild moisturizing shampoo with no coloring agents or dyes. A baby shampoo usually works best. Then it is up to you to start adding ingredients. Many natural herbs darken lighter hair shades. Sage works well in darkening hair, and it smells good, too. Coffee grounds, powdered cocoa, tea bags and henna also darken hair naturally. All of these natural ingredients are mild and will leave a darker hue on your hair after application. Along with darkening ingredients, you can also add a vanilla bean for a fragrant scent. Rosemary also works in enhancing color and aids in new cell growth to the scalp.

    • 2). When you have all your ingredients, put them into a pot with 1 cup of hot water and bring to a boil. The hotter sage gets in the pan, the more darkening power it will have on your hair. After all of the ingredients have been boiled, strain with a cheesecloth into a bowl and let the water cool. Then add the strained water to the baby shampoo and mix thoroughly. This water contains all the useful darkening agents.

    • 3). Before starting the full shampoo process, it is important to do a patch test on the underside of your hair to check the absorption and darkening effect. Apply some of the shampoo, let sit and rinse out. Wait 24 hours and check your hair. Add more or less darkening agents to the shampoo to achieve the desired look.

    • 4). When shampooing your hair with the infused product, it is important to leave it in your hair for at least 15 minutes. The longer you leave the shampoo in your hair, the darker your hair will become. The coloring agents have to soak in your hair, so it is important the shampoo gets a chance to absorb in your hair. The steam from the shower is helpful in creating heat to help the shampoo penetrate the hair. This will also aid in the darkening process.

    • 5). After you have left the darkening shampoo in your hair, rinse it out completely.

    • 6). Understand that the amount of darkening on blonde hair depends on each individual's beginning shade. People with dark blonde hair will see a small change in their color; if your hair is light blonde, increased darkening will result. The outcome will be a darker blonde to a reddish tone.
