The problem was that in our household some of the grandchildren could not control the fact that they wet the bed anymore than we as adults could keep the sun from shinning.
As I watched, I felt bad for cousins that could not control their bladder at bedtime.
Looking back I imagine my Grandmother was very irritated with the situation considering the limited availability of products to help families with bed wetting or incontinence issues.
Times have changed granting us the opportunity and assortment of products available to consumers that help alleviate the burden associated with incontinence or bed wetting.
Each product has its own drawback in its own way, but for the most part effective to some degree.
Pull-ups are great for children transitioning from one stage to another, major drawback as some children get older they refuse to wear them and the sizes are limited.
Under pads for some reason I found that other parents did not use this product either because they had not heard of it or they did not know they were available for purchase.
Drawback, it does not stay in place.
Diapers, same challenge as pull-ups some children will not wear them and size is limited.
Wrapping the mattress in tarp to protect the mattress, well you can imagine all that happens is that the urine runs off the mattress onto the floor.
A new product on the market is a disposable under short which can be effective, if a parent can get the preteen past the fact that it still acts as a diaper, limited clean up involved.
Vinyl mattress covers, they slip all around the place, they tear, we replaced them and it was so hot under the covers that it caused a heat rash, it still tore.
We replaced them on a monthly basis.
Oh, yes the good ole' stand by, place the towel underneath that child and go back to bed.
Besides the smell of urine, voids the mattress but great for quick cleanup.
A new product on the market, disposable bedding for incontinence or bed wetting, combines the disposable fitted sheet with disposable mattress cover and disposable under pads with adhesive strip backing.
The family of products combined are highly effective.
For the occasional wetter place a pad over the disposable fitted sheet, for a heavy wetter use all three pieces, some children are in the middle, for those children, always protect the mattress with a mattress cover, combine the under pads with disposable fitted sheet for moderate control and limited cleanup.
An additional benefit is to place an under pad in the sleeping bag of a wetter that previously could not go to a sleepover or have a sleepover party.
