How to Water a Seeded Lawn
- 1). Water the lawn immediately after it is seeded. Use a gentle spray of water from your hose or sprinkler system to moisten the soil. If water begins to puddle on the surface of the soil, the spray is too heavy. Insert a wooden dowel into the soil at several different areas of the lawn to test the moisture depth, and stop watering when the soil is moist to a depth of 4 to 6 inches.
- 2). Insert your finger into the top inch of the soil early in the morning before the sun has reached its peak to see if the soil is dry.
- 3). Water the soil early in the morning after the top 1/2 inch of the soil has dried out. Water with a light spray as described in Step 1, checking the depth of the moisture with the dowel. Stop watering when the top 4 inches of the soil are moist.
- 4). Reduce the frequency of your watering as the grass establishes itself. Roughly one week after the grass germinates, start watering only when the top inch of the soil has dried out. A week after that, allow the top 2 inches of the soil to dry out before watering. A week later, allow the top 3 inches of the soil to dry out before watering.
