- 1). Dry the area with heat. Unless your walls are solid steel, they most likely consist of a porous material, such as plaster, wood or stone. As a result, you will not effectively dry the wall unless you use a source of heat, which can penetrate beneath the surface. To de-moisturize your wall or wood fixture, turn on a heater or a portable dehumidifier, or increase the air circulation by pointing high-powered fans at the wall and opening doors and windows to promote air flow.
- 2). Dry wallpaper thoroughly if the mold problem occurs on any paper. To clean mold and mildew from the wallpaper, use nothing stronger than mild soapy water, according to the University of Minnesota Extension. Mix 1 or 2 drops of dishwashing detergent into a cup of water and blot the mildewed area with a damp sponge.
- 3). Clean tiled walls and painted walls using 1/2 to 1 cup of chlorine bleach mixed with 1 gallon of water. Spray the solution onto the wall from a spray bottle. Wait 15 minutes for disinfection, then rinse the bleach with water applied from a spray bottle or damp sponge. Use only light spritzes or applications of water to minimize your use of moisture.
- 4). Apply a mild alkali to wood walls and fixtures. The University of Missouri Extension recommends selecting a compound like trisodium phosphate or washing soda, both of which you can find in janitorial supply stores and some home improvement stores. Mix 8 to 10 tbsp. with a gallon of water and apply using a sponge or spray bottle. Rinse with clear water after 15 minutes.
- 5). Dry your wall or other wood surface a second time using one of the methods described in Step 1, and then vacuum the fixture using a thin hose or hand-held vacuum to remove the spores. Make sure to wash the vacuum filter outdoors or dispose of the bag immediately.
