Sugarcane is a sturdy, tall, native tropical grass of Asia and has been in cultivation in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world for nearly 4,000 years. According to the University of Florida Extension, sugarcane is the source of about 75 percent of the sugar used globally. A large number of hybrid sugarcane varieties are produced in the United States in Florida, Louisiana, Hawaii and Texas, in order of production.

    CL 61-620

    • CL 61-620 is a hybrid sugarcane variety with medium to high sugar content. The sugarcane variety prefers to grow in an organic soil and has the advantage of being sparsely late flowering. The stalk color is pink green. CL 61-620 is moderately tolerant of cold and frost and is difficult to harvest. The variety is susceptible to rust. The variety has a good regrowth rate after harvest.

    CP 80-1827

    • CP 80-1827 is a late season hybrid sugarcane that grows best in organic soil. The green and purple canes have wide foliage and an open canopy. CP 80-1827 has a good rate of growth after harvest and exhibits a poor tolerance for cold and a moderate tolerance for frost. The variety is susceptible to RSD and rust, but is preferred for its rich sugar content. CP 80-1827 flowers in early season and is low in fiber.

    CP 92-1641

    • CP 92-1641 hybrid sugarcane is well adapted to growing in all soil types and produces wine colored stalks. The canes have a poor to fair level of regrowth potential after harvest and display a moderate to good level of tolerance for frost and cold. CP 92-1641 has a high resistance to disease with no serious disease related issues. The sugarcane is ready for harvest early in the season and is a preferred variety with relatively few disadvantages.

    CP 78-1628

    • CP 78-1628 hybrid sugarcane has narrow leaf width with small to medium sized canes. The variety is adapted to growing in all soil types including wet, but is susceptible to smut when grown in organic and sandy soils. CP 78-1628 is difficult to harvest with a moderate level of cold tolerance. The sugarcane is ready to harvest in mid-season and has relatively few disadvantages.
