Trap type

• Baited traps that have trigger-activated doors are the best choice for capturing an opossum. The trap should be at least 10 by 12 by 32 inches in size. A common brand is Hav-a-hart. These are wire mesh traps that have a handle on top for easy removal.
  
  

Trap location

• Place a trap along a known travel route. Opossums usually enter yards or human areas along fence rows, shrubby areas or tree lines.
  
  

Bait types

• Since opossums eat both meat and vegetables, it doesn't much matter what type of food is used as bait. Cat food, cheese, meat, fish, fruit or peanut butter are common types of bait. If there are dogs or cats in the vicinity, use a lure they would usually not be attracted to, such as fruit.
  
  

Prevention first

• To keep opossums from becoming a nuisance, make sure garbage cans are tightly fastened. Mulch piles should be kept away from housing structures. Don't leave dog or cat food outside during the night.
