How to Insert an 8 Gauge Tongue Ring
- 1). Allow your tongue piercing to heal before stretching it. Tongue piercings take four to six weeks to heal (see Reference 3). Wait at least two or three times that long before attempting to stretch the piercing (see Reference 2).
- 2). Wash your hands with warm water and anti-microbial soap before removing your tongue ring.
- 3). Wash your piercing jewelry and stretching taper with warm water and anti-microbial soap. Rinse the jewelry with warm water to remove all traces of the soap.
- 4). Remove the jewelry from your tongue.
- 5). Insert a stretching taper into the bottom of your tongue piercing. If your current piercing jewelry is 14 gauge, use a 14- to 12-gauge taper. Push the taper through your tongue slowly until the thick end of the taper is completely inserted into your tongue.
- 6). Insert a 12-gauge barbell through the bottom of your tongue piercing. Push the end of the taper out of your tongue with the end of the barbell as you insert it into your tongue. Screw on the barbell ball.
- 7). Wait several weeks for your stretched tongue piercing to heal. Follow the same cleaning procedures your body piercing professional prescribed when your tongue was first pierced. Rinse your mouth with salt water two to three times per day.
- 8). Stretch your tongue from 12 gauge to 10 gauge, then 10 gauge to 8 gauge using the same process. Allow the stretched piercing to heal at every step of the stretching process.
