- 1). Turn the printer on and open the top cover. Wait for the print cartridges to move to the center. Never attempt to move the cartridge by hand; doing so could damage the print head mechanism.
- 2). Tilt the cartridges forward and carefully lift them out of the machine. Position each cartridge so the metal connectors are facing you.
- 3). Dip a cotton swab in warm water and carefully clean the entire metal surface of the cartridge to remove any paper dust or ink residue. Use isopropyl alcohol instead of warm water for heavy accumulations of ink.
- 4). Vacuum the interior of the printer with a small vacuum cleaner like the type used to clean computers. Use the vacuum to remove any paper dust and ink that has accumulated inside the printer. Wipe the inside of the printer with a soft cloth to remove any remaining ink residue and paper dust.
- 1). Lift the toner cartridge cover and remove the toner cartridge if you notice spots or streaks on your printouts. On most laser printers the toner cartridge is either at the front of the printer or on the right side.
- 2). Remove the toner cartridge from the printer and set it aside. Set the cartridge on a cloth or paper towel to protect your work surface and check for leaks.
- 3). Clean the interior of the printer, under where the toner cartridge was, with a small vacuum cleaner. The type of vacuum used to clean computers is best, but you can also use a vacuum cleaner with a small crevice attachment. Just be sure to remove any toner residue and paper dust from the printer.
- 4). Wipe down the printer with a soft cloth to remove any remaining toner residue or paper dust. Continue cleaning the printer until all debris is removed.
- 5). Turn the toner cartridge over and examine your work surface for leaks. Also examine the toner cartridge for signs of leaks. Replace the toner if it is leaking.
