Ovens - Cleaning Tips and Hints
Electric and gas ovens: The easiest way by far to stop your oven from becoming horrendously difficult to clean is by wiping it clean after every use. Always wait for the oven to cool down, and then wipe it down using a damp cloth, remembering also to clean the oven shelves.
Even if your oven has come equipped with easy clean panels at the back and the sides, do still remember that these will need to be cleaned every week, especially if you have been cooking a lot of food at high temperatures. Use a nylon pan scourer and water to clean off any large burnt patches so as not to damage your oven.
If your oven is not too dirty, it can be cleaned using bicarbonate of soda. wipe the surface down and sprinkle on a little bicarbonate. Leave it to soak in for a little while, then clean with a nylon scourer, wiping it down with a damp cloth as you proceed. Then rinse down using clean water and wipe the surfaces dry.
Badly marked oven: If the oven has been left to become really dirty, then use a proprietary oven cleaner. These usually come in the shape of an aerosol or a caustic cream, so you will need the windows open to provide plenty of ventilation whilst cleaning, and put down some newspaper on the floor to catch all the drips. Also make sure that you wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.
Grill Pans: As grill pans are used so frequently, they really should be cleansed after every use to avoid dirt gradually building up. Use a pan scourer to wash the grill up along with the other pots and pans after every meal. If the grill has been allowed to get really dirty, then put a little ammonia into the pan, and leave it covered up outside somewhere for the day to allow the ammonia to lift up all the grease. On the next day, bring the pan back in and thoroughly rinse it out using cold water. This should remove most of the dirt, and any that is left should now wipe off pretty easily.
Following these instructions should hopefully give you some insight into how best to maintain your oven, keeping it looking good and in great working condition for many years.
