    Insect Damage

    • Borers, aphids and spider mites are pests known to infest Kwanzan cherry trees. Regular inspection of your tree and early treatment will keep insects in check.

    Pollution

    • Because Kwanzan cherries are neither stress tolerant nor drought tolerant, it is important to plant them away from busy streets and areas where the ground may become compacted. This tree is better suited to yards and parks.

    Plant Diseases

    • Kwanzan cherries are susceptible to disease because they are bred for the flowers and not for hardiness. Twig cankers are common and should be pruned out when observed. Leaf spot will start as discolored circles, which will then fall out, giving the leaf a "Swiss cheese" appearance. Remove infected leaves from the tree and rake up any that fall.

    Life Span

    • The life span for Kwanzan cherry trees is 15 to 25 years. Diseases, insects and pollution are all factors which may shorten the life span even more.

    Fun Fact

    • The beautiful flowers, lack of messy fruit, and elegant vase-shape of the Kwanzan cherry tree are much sought after qualities. The annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., features this variety of flowering cherry.
