Different Fields of Forensic Science
- Criminalists play two important roles in forensic science---they first identify evidence and then connect it to a victim, suspect and crime scene. They examine evidence such as fibers, hair, blood and fingerprints in order to help solve crimes.
- When documents are in question, examiners work to determine who wrote them, what kind of pens and paper were used and whether or not information has been altered. These kind of forensic scientists also use chemical and physical analysis to date when a document was created.
- Wildlife forensics deals with crimes that are committed against animals. The work in this field of forensic science includes identifying the species that was killed and determining if the death was the result of a crime or activity by another animal.
- Forensic psychology is involved with both criminal and civil cases. In this area of forensic science, professionals answer questions about someone's fitness to stand trial, refuse medical treatment or have custody of children.
- Pathology is the study of disease and forensic pathology is concerned with a person's cause of death. Forensic pathologists perform autopsies, which reveal if someone died by suicide, homicide or natural causes.
