    • 1). Apply a small amount of the petroleum jelly to your cuticles.

    • 2). Pour the acetone into a bowl and soak your nails. Use enough acetone to cover your nails while they rest in the bowl. Allow your nails to soak for about ten or fifteen minutes, so that the acrylic on the nails beings to soften. Using room temperature acetone helps to decrease the time required to melt the fake nails. You can place the bowl of acetone into a bowl of hot water, to warm it to room temperature.

    • 3). Remove the acrylic from the nail, using the cotton balls, and trim them with the nail clippers. If the acrylic is not soft or gummy -- then continue to soak the nails in the acetone, until the acrylic softens -- to avoid pain, or breaking of your natural nail.

    • 4). Wash your hands thoroughly, to remove the acetone from your nails and hands.

    • 5). Apply petroleum jelly to your hands, to seal in the moisture lost through using the harsh acetone.
