Sewing Instructions for a Comforter

Purchase the fabric you want that matches the bedroom. Make a comforter more interesting by purchasing two different types of fabrics. Use a different fabric print for each side. Buy a total of 10½ yards for a twin or full-size comforter, 15 yards for a queen size and 16 yards for a king size.

For the twin or double-size comforter, cut the fabric in half. (Note: all cuts are from selvage edge to selvage edge.) Use half for the front and half for the back. Take one of the halves and cut it in half again. Repeat with the half of fabric reserved for the other side of the comforter. You will now have four pieces of fabric that are the same size.

For the queen and king size comforter, cut the fabric in half. Cut each half into thirds. You will now have six pieces of fabric that are the same length.

For the twin and double-size comforter, lay out the two pieces for the top of the comforter with right sides together. Put pins all the way down one side of the selvage edges and sew. Repeat for the other two pieces of fabric for the bottom of the comforter. Iron the seams flat.

For the queen- and king-size comforters, lay out two of the pieces for the top of the comforter with right sides together. Pin down one of the selvage edge sides and sew. Repeat this process to add the third section of front. Repeat with the back pieces. Iron the seams flat.

For all sizes lay the top of the comforter on a clean floor with the right side facing up. Lay the back of the comforter on top with right sides facing together. Place a piece of batting on top of the fabric pieces. Trim away any excess batting. Pin the batting to the comforter around three sides. Sew around all three sides, making sure to catch all three layers in the seam.

Turn the comforter right side out. Turn under the raw fabric edges of the comforter and pin in place. Sew across the top of the comforter. Top stitch all around the edges of the comforter to complete the project.

Make this project even easier by purchasing sheets in the appropriate size for your bed. Skip the cutting steps and move right on to adding the batting. This method prevents seams in the middle of your finished comforter, but the fabric choices are limited.
