Beware of False Followers Bearing Tweets
My first thought was how wonderful my marketing efforts were starting to gain traction and possibly in the future some of my followers would engage in business with me.
The profile of the person following me was in-line with my profession, so I thought at least I had a kindred spirit where maybe I could learn something from him that could help expand my business.
The biggest advantage social media has over offline marketing is the speed by which you can initiate relationships.
Although reaching out to someone travels at the speed of light, relationship building usually occurs at a snail's pace.
Meaningful relationships can develop in an instant, but usually not until each party develops the bond where they know, like and trust the other.
As I looked over the profile of my new friend to be, I noticed he had many followers, over 27,000.
I thought this guy really knows his stuff considering his line of work, but then I noticed the number of people he was following, over 28,000.
At that instant I knew I was being approached by someone who really wasn't interested in building a relationship with me! Automation is a wonderful thing; it can alleviate the mundane and repetitive nature of tasks.
Unfortunately you will encounter people who use automation for the sole purpose of building a list instead of a relationship.
Now how could I make a snap judgment like this with only the two pieces of information I've given you? As I studied his profile, his bio directed me to his webpage where he was extolling how to make $$$ dollars a day using a software tool to cull potential followers in Twitter.
He went on in his review about buying a multiple license copy of the software so you could run multiple profile searches simultaneously to build multiple lists.
To add more damning proof, I went back to his Twitter account and noticed he had over 13,000 tweets.
Not even the most rabid teenager with nimble fingers can tweet that many tweets! As I read some of the tweets, I noticed they were generated from a software product he was using to post to this Twitter account X times per day.
Of his 13,000+ tweets, most likely he never tweeted a single one! Suffice to say I did not return the favor and follow this individual.
And as final proof this person wasn't interested in a relationship, his software program dutifully removed his follow 24 hours later.
As you delve into social media, realize that social media is all about being social.
Social doesn't explicitly mean being buddy-buddy.
Social means providing value to the other person.
You can talk exclusive about your business, but it has to be in a way where you are providing education, knowledgeor useful experiences that will benefit your followers.
Although rooted in spiritual principles, in social media, it is far better to give of yourself freely than to expect a return of your favor.
