So you're coming to Ljubljana but don't want to spend a fortune as a tourist not knowing what the Slovene's know.
In this article I will guide you through some basic tips from someone living in the city, to help you save a few euro's that can be spent doing something else.
This article is based on you coming to Ljubljana for two weeks as some tips may not be practical in a few days and for longer stays there may be other things worth knowing.
Bus cards If you're planning to travel around the city a lot then a bus card is a must.
In Ljubljana buses cost 1 euro a ride for adults with no difference in distance traveled.
However there is an alternative.
Slovenes who travel by bus every day usually get a bus card.
Bus cards can be brought for a month period or there is a top up option much like a Oyster Card in London.
By getting a top up card you can ride on buses for 80 cents with the added bonus of being able to travel on any and as many buses in an hour and a half for that same 80 cents.
So if you need to get on two buses to get where your going, a journey that would perhaps cost 4 Euros there and back, will cost only 1 euro 60 cents.
If you do a similar journey for two weeks you'll save nearly 34 Euros.
If you're unsure on how many journeys you'll take via bus I suggest topping up 5 Euros initially and then next to most main bus stops are green machines (that work in English to) where you can top up any additional funds you need.
To obtain the card take yourself and your passport to the LPP station in Siska.
You can get there via the number 3, 5, and 1.
from the centre.
Time taken: 2 hours Max saving: 34 euro's Coffee and net Part of Slovene lifestyle is to often meet with friends have a coffee and a chat and no doubt you will want to enjoy this to.
Coffee and tea prices in Ljubljana tend to vary from 1.
10 euro up to 2.
50 euro.
Many people nowadays while traveling still enjoy keeping in touch with the world back at home through emails and social network sites.
Ljubljana doesn't have a wide Wi-Fi network and the places that do quite often charger you to connect as much as 2 Euros for 20 mins.
My insider tip that combines both of these problems and saves you money is a Bar next to the Puppet museum and the lift to the castle.
There is a row of three cafes here, head for the middle one called "Na Plac".
Here you will find tea at 1.
30 and coffee the same.
There is also a happy hour usually between 3-5 pm giving you 20 percent of your bill.
Inside you will find a laptop that is free to use to customers so you can check those emails.
On top of all this the service is great with staff who extremely friendly and helpful.
The location is convenient to, being nice and central.
If you would take coffee each day as the Slovenes do and would check you mails once a day on a two week stay in Ljubljana you could save over 32 Euros.
So here are two easy and simple ways to save you over 70 euro's while in Ljubljana.
The trick to saving money while abroad anywhere is to do and know what the locals know.
