Homeland Security - Just Like Home Security, It"s Within Your Reach

Though the terrorist attacks that took place on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington several years ago, they remain ingrained in the consciences of the American people.
The events of September 11th, 2001 altered the minds and hearts of the world forever and caused fundamental shifts in the way in which we live our lives.
And though today hot button issues such as the economy and health care have largely eclipsed the issue of terrorism and national safety, homeland security remains an important topic in the national political dialogue.
But dealing with the issue itself can be difficult.
Unlike home security, homeland security is largely out of our hands.
The thought of the threat of terrorism or attack can leave us feeling helpless.
If something were to happen, we worry that we would be unable to react.
Although our home alarm systems and home security systems will do little in the face of an attack, there are certain measures we can take and certain conversations we can have in order to be better prepared.
It's never a bad idea to learn more about the issues that interest us - especially when they involve our well-being.
So, take some time out to learn about the threat of terrorist attacks as well as the mechanisms in place to combat such menaces.
Not only will you be better informed and therefore better prepared, but you may also be able to put your mind at ease a bit in knowing that a lot is being done to keep you and your family safe.
While you're reading up on the issue in general, find out what specific homeland security measures are being taken in your area.
You may be surprised to find out that even the tiniest towns probably have some sort of mechanism in the case of a national security emergency.
Find out how you can volunteer your time and join the cause if you are interested, and participate in local practice drills and forums.
Once you've learned all you can about homeland security, make sure to spread the knowledge.
Many people won't take the time out to learn the ins and outs of the issue, so the choice to share what you've learned is a good one.
Moreover, as home security and terrorism is quite the hot topic today, you will probably be able to use your savvy in political conversation and debate.
The things you learn about terrorism and national security should not be kept to yourself.
Finally, don't forget to engage your children in the conversation.
Just as you speak to them about personal safety and home security, you should speak to them about terrorism as well.
There's no need to go into deep details - a few simple explanations will do.
Children may be terrified by the sensation and exaggeration with which the news treats the issue of terrorism, and it is not a bad idea to explain to them not only that there is very little risk, but also that various measures are being taken to ensure their safety.
Homeland security is an adult topic of which children, unfortunately, must be aware.
Homeland security, like home security, is not completely out of your hands.
Knowledge goes a long way in the battle of national security, so go ahead and get some.
