    • 1). Check to see that the printer is unplugged, but near a working electrical outlet. Find the telephone wire that comes with the printer.

    • 2). Place one end of the telephone wire in the phone or the jack in the wall that you are going to use. Remove the cover of the telephone port found on the bottom left hand side of the back of the printer and plug the other end of the phone line into the Pixma MX860.

    • 3). Insert the power cable into the bottom right of the printer. Plug the printer into an electrical outlet and turn it on using the "On" button on the top front of the machine. Use the USB cable and connect the printer to the computer.

    • 4). Use the arrows on the side of your printer's LCD panel to change each setting and click "OK" when you have the language, country and all the correct settings for your printer.

    • 5). Finish the initial set up of the fax, phone and printer. Make sure you are using a valid and working phone line for the fax.

    • 6). Shut down all applications running on your computer. Insert the driver CD into your computer and install the driver software. If you are asked to, restart your computer after the installation.

    • 7). Look at the your Canon manual and find the chart that has the exact alphanumeric code you need to enter to connect the printer paired with your computer. You will enter this code when prompted by the setup wizard. It is essential that you use the numbers that correspond to your computer and your router.

    • 8). Set the LAN settings by pressing the Menu button on the printer. Use the right and left arrows to select LAN settings for your computer and click "OK." Scroll through the Settings and choose the one for your computer and router that says WLAN/LAN and click "OK."

    • 9). Go to the menu again and press the right arrow or "B" to select Settings once again. Click "OK." Use the arrows to get to Device Settings and click "OK." Find the line that says Wireless LAN setting and click "OK."

      Set up your password by scrolling to the WPS Setting and clicking "OK." Under this heading find the PIN Code Method. A series of screens will guide you through the setup of a security code.

      Find the Start menu on your computer and open it. Got to the Network folder and click it open. Choose Add a Device from the menu. Add the printer. Choose your network name from the list that will come on to the screen and then click on "Next."

      Find the User Agreement that will come up on your screen and click "Agree." Follow the steps in the installation wizard that will take you from screen to screen. Just remember to check "Next" when each step is done and "Finish" when you are finished. Click "Exit" and restart your computer.
