How to Draw Building Foundations
- 1). Study the reference pictures of the type of building foundation you would like to draw. Take notice of fine details. Is the foundation worn, does it have cracks, are there weeds or other plants growing at the base of it? These are all small details that can add to the overall success of the drawing.
- 2). Determine the angle that the building will be drawn from and also the light source. Draw the basic lines of the foundation based on that angle. The closest part of the foundation will be larger and the line will gradually fade into the background of the drawing.
- 3). Use a straight edge to make the basic lines crisp and further define the lines of the foundation. Determine the building material for the foundation. For the purposes of the explanation, assume the building material is field stone. The building is a country cottage. Draw various shapes and sizes to form the outline of the stones between the foundation lines.
- 4). Add little details and shading to the outlines of the field stone. Some of the stones may have moss growing on them. Shade and add texture to the stones. The more detail you can add to the stones, the better the foundation will appear. Add some small shrubs and plants to the base of the foundation. An old country cottage might have vines growing at various points along the foundation as well.
- 5). Use a paper stump to refine the details and shading. Pay close attention to the source of light in the drawing. Adjust areas where the shading is too light or too dark. Use the eraser to lighten dark areas and a pencil to darken lighter areas as needed.
- 6). Use an eraser to clean up areas of the drawing that may have stray pencil marks or smudges. The foundation should now be complete. Continue with the rest of the drawing as you see fit.
