- 1). Plan transportation in advance. Because of its location, Catalina Island is only accessible via helicopter or ferry. Both methods can be equally charming for first-time visitors, but keep in mind that flying in will cost you considerably more. Once in the island, walking is your best option, or you can rent a bicycle or golf cart.
- 2). Request a free visitors’ guide from the Official Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau of Catalina Island. The vacation planner features information on packages and tours, destinations within the island, accommodations and live events throughout the year. It also includes links to specific websites where you can find updated information as the months go by and new events are introduced (see Resources below).
- 3). Take one of the famous discovery tours offered in the island year-round. The most popular ones include the Cape Canyon, Undersea and Glass Bottom Boat Tours. Tours can be reserved through the Visitor’s Bureau website or bought on the spot, but keep in mind that you may not be able to get an open spot during the busy summer season.
- 4). Spend time on the beach. Catalina Island is famous for its white beaches, of which Avalon beach and Lover's Cove are especially popular. The island is popular with skydivers and snorkelers, and there are several spots especially designated for kayaking and boating. Para-sailing is also popular on the beach.
- 5). Don’t forget the art scene. Catalina Island hosts the Jazztrax Festival each year and is home to the Catalina Island Museum, which holds over 100,000 items, including a large Native American collection and tons of naval articles. The museum also hosts several programs, from walking tours to lectures and workshops.
