A Travel Guide for the Bussa Emancipation Statue in Barbados
- The people of Barbados call the Emancipation Statue "Bussa" after an African slave who led Barbados's longest revolt against white plantation owners. Bussa planned the revolt in advance to influence general politics of the time. Bussa was killed in battle but his troops continued to fight without him until defeated by firepower.
- Once the slaves of Barbados were finally completely legally free in 1848, they took to the streets singing this song, which is now engraved on Bussa's statue:
De Ting come from England
To Set We Free Now Lick
And Lock-up Done Wid
Hurrah Fuh Jin-Jin - Karl Broodhagen, Barbados's best known sculptor, created Bussa. The statue depicts a man wearing shackles with broken chains. It symbolizes the breaking of the chains of slavery during the emancipation.
