Define All Weather Tires

    Benefits

    • Performance benefits of all-weather tires are most apparent in climates with frequent weather changes. When driving conditions are relatively stable, all-weather tires may not give any additional benefits. For moderate climates, drivers may benefit from all-weather tires for most of the year, performing equally well through various seasons and driving conditions. In addition, the tires are made from special compounds that enable them to withstand temperature changes. Although all-weather tires are able to perform better than traditional tires in slightly snowy conditions, they may not be sufficient in heavy snow.

    Traction

    • All-weather tires are rated according to traction. Understanding the rating system is important to select the right tire in different conditions. Traction rating is designated by letters, with AA being the highest rated and C being the lowest rated. Tires with higher traction grades will be able to come to a halt faster in wet roads. Another rating system is based on weather conditions; used mostly in classifying all-terrain tires, the top grades in this rating system are able to perform in extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain and snow.

    Tread and Temperature

    • The tread rating, normally between 100 to 700, is a measure of how fast the treads will wear down. Higher rates indicate that the treads wear at a slower rate. The temperature grade measures the tire's heat resistance; higher rated tires are better able to maintain their structural integrity over periods of hot conditions.

    Types

    • All-weather tires can be of different types. The most basic type is known as standard all-weather tire, or passenger all-weather tire. The standard version has comparable traction, but handling and responses to steering fall short of more enhanced tire types. Another variant, touring all-weather tires, are built for comfort and have good traction with smooth performance. One of the most advanced versions is high-performance all-weather tires, which have year-round traction and superior handling characteristics, compared with standard and touring types. The ultra-high performance all-weather tires are the most advanced type, with enhanced tread design and material that allows the tire to stay flexible in extreme weathers.

    Brands

    • All-weather tires are manufactured by more than a dozen companies. The Bridgestone Turanza LS-H is the most popular choice for high-performance all-weather tires. The brand has good resistance to hydroplaning and cornering in wet conditions due to a very effective design for water evacuation channels. For standard all-weather tires, the Yokohama Avid TRZ is one of the highest performing, with comfortable wet and dry acceleration and braking, smooth ride and low noise.
