How to Build a Small Electric Engine
- 1). Set the screw, head down on the magnet. A dry wall screw will work best because the large flat head provides a large surface area for the magnet to make contact with.
- 2). Put the tip of the screw in the center of the battery's positive end. Specifically, center the screw in the middle of the button. The screw will stick to the battery because it is magnetized by the magnet on its head.
- 3). Press one end of the copper wire to the center of the battery's negative end. The end of the copper wire should be bare, and should make full contact with the end of the battery.
- 4). Hold the other end of the copper wire so that it just touches the edge of the magnet. It is important that the wire only touch the magnet's side, and not the face. When contact is made, the screw should begin to spin.
- 5). Remove the wire from the battery in order to stop the engine. This should be done before the wire gets hot enough to burn your fingers, and before the screw spins fast enough to become unstable.
- 6). Flip the magnet over, so that the opposite face is on the head of the nail. This will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction.
