The Monterey Herald reported today that after two years of bickering the Cypress Knolls senior living community which is planned to be built in Marina is still on hold, and the City Council is seeking new bids for a smaller project on just half the acreage it had planned for the project before. Two groups, Peninsula Housing Partners and Coastal Rim Properties, had been vying against one another to build a 772-home project on two acres, but the project ran into trouble when it was alleged by one of the City Council members that one of the bidders tried to bribe him. When the project once again appeared to be on track, Governor Jerry Brown announced he planned to completely cut funding for city redevelopment agencies, and both developers had been planning on funding from this source. Cypress Knolls is just one of a number of projects which was to be completed on the old Ford Ord site which have been delayed or canceled due to the poor economy. Members of the public attending the City Council meeting were reportedly exasperated with government officials over the long delay the project has already seen, and they called for the demolition of Army housing which is currently sitting on the site deteriorating. Almost $1 million has been spent trying to develop Cypress Point, not to mention the millions in funds spent for roads and other infrastructure surrounding Fort Ord. Now, the City Council is reopening the proposal process to try to find a new developer who will build 400 units on 90 acres. The selection process may not even be finished until next summer. Let's hope that if and when this is built, there will be plenty of affordable housing units. The Monterey Peninsula has a dearth of affordable housing units for seniors, and living here has continued to get more expensive despite the weak economy.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
