DIY Interior Storm Windows
- Begin the storm window by making a simple frame. Measure the dimensions of the window before beginning on the frame then decide if the storm window will go inside the window frame or on the outside casement. The frame itself can be made from wood or from metal screen framing material; both can be purchased at a home improvement store. If using wood, it only needs to be about 3/4-inch thick by 1-inch wide and cut to the measured dimensions. Use wood glue and dry wall screws on the ends of the tallest pieces to construct the frame.
If using metal framing material, have it cut to the proper dimensions. Attach each piece of framing material with framing corner pieces specifically made for the material to finish the frame - Purchase a package of the window heat shrink wrap, double-sided tape and foam weather stripping about ½-inch thick. On the wood frame, line one entire side of the frame with double-sided tape. Place a large piece of the heat shrink wrap on top of the double-sided tape and press down so it is fully adhered. Cut off the excess shrink wrap then use a hair dryer on high heat, holding it about six inches from the shrink wrap until the wrap is as tight as possible.
For the metal frame, lay a large piece of the shrink wrap down then place the frame on top of it. Put double-sided tape on the side of the frame facing up, then wrap the shrink wrap around the edges. Cut off any excess shrink wrap then using a hair dryer on high heat, again hold it about six inches from the shrink wrap until the wrap is as tight as possible. Wrapping the shrink wrap around the frame can be done on the wood frame also. - If the frame is going inside the window, then place the foam weather stripping on the four interior sides of the frame. Put them in place and secure with either swing cleats or a purchased plastic screen channel. If the frame is going on the outside of the window casement, the foam weather stripping should line the edges of the casement to prevent drafts. Attach to the outside of the casement with swing cleats or framing clips.
